What are the benefits of Fluid Power Systems?

The core theme of Fluid Power Circuits is about producing quality schematics and fluid power circuit designs. This week I have been working on a particular application that by its functional requirements was quite straight forward, however, as the details started to evolve with how it is/was to operate,  where it was intended to operate. My concerns started to increase to a point that internal alarms started going off, as always at this point it is about slowing down the project and to re-think the design outline.

Ask an experienced engineer and the technical answer is something like: “Depends” because the environmental variables around the fluid will have an impact on its life usefulness.

Of course, they then introduce terms like ‘Fluid Degradation, by mechanical and thermal stress’; at this point, I think of the former politician Pauline Hanson’s famous statement “Please Explain”. Yes, I am gulity of looking for simple explanations, not too simple and not too complicated, so I thought I would try and articulate ‘What is Fluid Degradation?’ in my words.

Given the multi -billion dollar Reliability Engineering industry that is dedicated to setting up maintenance programs to ensure machines are dependable and have an appropriate lifecycle. Yet, go into any hydraulic workshop scattered across the country, small or large and there are thousands of examples where a system has failed due to poor fluid quality.

Why? Is the fluid maintenance message not getting through?
